BAKING SCHOOLS    OUR FAVORITE BAKERIES

Well now that we are a few years into owing our own business, we are finally able to get away to see what the rest of the world (and country) is baking. 

Always on pursuit of finding great bakeries on our travels, it's fun for us to see what people are doing, who is opening up what and where, and best yet...what they are making.

Last fall we enjoyed the pastries from The Cinnamon Twist Bakery in the Methow Valley.  The Rocking Horse Bakery in Winthrop makes some basic breads and treats with good coffee and atmosphere in a quaint rustic western town.

Tartine (a Mission District mecca) redeemed itself recently in our eyes.  Our head baker Caryn was in San Francisco for baking school and brought back a fantastic loaf of rustic olive bread. 

Bakery Nouveau in West Seattle has a tasty loaf of Sunflower Rye.  We have yet to be disappointed with anything William puts in front of us.  See if he has a hot pizza out of the oven or the newly brainstormed laminated Fougasse.  They also specialize in house-made chocolates and pastry and sell bread fresh out of the oven.  Ummmm.

Right up from the Farmers Market in Olympia, WA you will find The Bread Peddler .  We tried a crispy baguette, one of the best sandwiches we have had in awhile, (Oven Roasted Tomato) and a delicious quiche.

Whenever we make it to Seattle, we love visiting Columbia City Bakery for a seeded baguette and coffee.  Evan never fails to amaze us with his offerings and his orchestration of staffing in this busy hub just south of downtown.

Wild Fire Bakery in Victoria, BC, is a super cool spot with organic bread baked in a wood fired oven.

The laminated dough at Pacific Way Cafe in Gearhart on the Oregon Coast is worth a drive on its own.  And we had some dynamite stuff in our old stomping grounds, Fleur De Lis Bakery, in the Hollywood district of Portland.
